Though a master’s of business administration (MBA) may make one a good candidate for management positions it does not necessarily guaranteed employment. In fact, with the increased number of professionals returning to school to get advanced degree it makes it harder to find employment. With solid plans for using a master’s degree one can achieve huge financial rewards. MBA graduates make more money over the course of their careers than those who do not return to school. The opportunity for advancement and to make more money is the motivation for returning to school.

Providing for the needs of one’s family may be one reason to postpone returning to school, another reason may be that one’s current position leaves no time for studying. Some organizations will allow one to advance or take a management position without a graduate degree but one may not get paid as well as someone who has an MBA. People in management positions have to be able to adapt to the changing needs of their organizations. If one cannot find the time to return to school they may be destined to become stagnant in their career. Technology is making it much harder for one not to return to school.

Most graduate programs are now offering more options to working professionals. Online and evening classes make returning to school much easier. According to (Barrow & Rouse, 2005, p. 4), new technology is increasing the productivity of high-skilled workers. This leads one to believe that fewer jobs will be needed if the productivity rate of all skilled workers increases. Graduate programs help students to become familiar with new technologies and business strategies that will allow them to become better assets to their respective companies.

With fewer jobs available due to the increased productivity of high-skilled workers, it becomes progressively more important that one obtains the necessary skills to remain employed. If one does not remain current in his or her field it becomes very difficult to advance. When middle and senior-level management positions are available within an organization, employees who have taken the initiative to develop skills and adapt to the company’s culture usually fill the positions.

Finding employment becomes harder if one waits until they graduate to decide what they want to do. The reason it becomes hard to find suitable employment is because of the abundance of graduates. When graduates cannot find employment that matches their skill set they take jobs away from those with less education. Sum, Barnicle, Khatiwada, McLaughlin, & Palma, (2006) found the following: Fewer young college graduates have been able to obtain college labor market jobs, and their real wages and annual earnings have declined accordingly due to rising mal-employment.

These young college graduates also take jobs that displace their peers with lower levels of schooling. (p. 29) One can also assume that this applies to graduate level professionals as well. When these professionals graduate and do not find jobs with higher pay or increased levels of authority they hinder employees on subordinate levels from being promoted. One solution to this problem would be for all those that are pursuing graduate level degrees to also acquire a specialized skill set or certification.

Certification in software application, project management, or any other special area complements a graduate degree very well. Special skills and certification show employers one is committed to continuing to educate themselves thus, making them more valuable to an organization. Acquiring a set of special skills makes graduates more marketable and allows them the opportunity to demand more money than those who only have a graduate degree. In conclusion, if one receives a graduate degree they should also look to specialize in an area.
