Visual Perception Of Architecture Cultural Studies Essay

Architecture is a tool through which we relate ourselves to this universe, we relate ourselves to clip and infinite. This relation is made through architecture, which is experienced by our senses. If we isolate ourselves from sing infinite and clip, we remove our being ( the ‘I ‘ ) in this universe. Architecture is the representation of ego. Architecture which stimulates senses non merely enhances the quality of edifice and infinite but besides enhances and strengthens the whole being of worlds on this Earth.

Experience of a infinite through our five senses alteration as per laterality of one peculiar sense. Before sixteenth century people merely did n’t first see but smelled and heard. During Renaissance there was a displacement from this and the ocular became the dominant sense of all and the same is prevailing boulder clay now, ocular dominates over all other senses.[ 1 ]This laterality of ocular can besides be seen in the Hagiographas of Plato, Aristotle, and Heraclitus etc. , how they consider oculus and vision as the supreme gift for the life existences. But as Juhani Pallasma writes and describes in his book, ‘Eyes of the tegument ‘ , Tactile sense as the most important sense of all and all the other senses including vision as its extension, and if this is true so why is ocular sense so dominant?

Architecture is extremely affected by the manner it has to be experienced. Dominance of a peculiar sense over others affects the whole architecture. Similarly, as the laterality of a sense affects architecture, loss of a peculiar sense besides affects it. State if a edifice is to be experienced by merely those who are visually impaired so its architecture should reflect it. So architecture to be universally experienced by all sorts of people should be multi-sensory.

The ground for laterality could be many things. One of the illustrations for this laterality could be technological promotions. In the universe of engineering where most people spend most of the clip on cyberspace, it ‘s the expression of a edifice that becomes the most of import as exposure are what will be seen of it. Introduction of computing machine package ‘s which help doing organic signifiers besides in some manner promotes the laterality of ocular sense. So, what is the function of engineering in advancing the laterality of ocular sense over others?

This thesis briefly aims to oppugn the laterality of ocular sense over other senses, and what function does architecture play in raising the other hibernating senses of human existences, or to state does it hold a function to play?

To understand the laterality of ocular sense and its effects on architecture, this thesis intends to understand the Non-visual perceptual experience or blind people ‘s Percept of architecture because they by default do n’t hold this factor of ocular sense. It is non that due to the deficiency of ocular sense their other senses get amplified, but they do hold a better animal experience so a normal individual. By understanding at that place experience we can see where we lack in supplying a multi-sensory architecture. So, this brings us down to the chief inquiry which this thesis intends to reply – How can we heighten the experience of architecture through our senses by understanding the Percept of Architecture through Non-Visual senses ( Blinds Perception of Architecture ) .

RESEARCH QUESTION

How can we heighten the experience of architecture through our senses by understanding the Percept of Architecture through Non-Visual senses ( Blinds Perception of Architecture ) .

I.I NEED IDENTIFICATION

Our experience of infinite and clip through our senses is being polluted by the life manner we follow today. Pollution and the fast running life barely leave any experience for our senses. There is a strong demand for an architecture which invokes the hibernating senses and defines what a multi-sensory experience is.

A demand to understand our senses ( specially other four senses ) and their function in linking one with the architecture around.

Architectures function has to analyze in exciting our senses and making edifices and infinite which compensate our loss of experience, due to our life style or the whole metropolis ( e.g. Traffic ) .

I.II SCOPE

This Dissertations immediate range is concerned with analyzing five senses – Vision, Tactile, Olfactory, Taste and Acoustic and at that place function in understanding and associating one with architecture, and therefore showing the statement of the laterality of ocular sense. A really limited treatment will be presented on all 19 senses together ; otherwise this thesis will be limited to merely five senses mentioned above. Perceptual facet of Non-Visual architecture or blinds architecture falls under the range, go forthing the proficient facet of it.

I.III LIMITATIONS

Due to limited interactions with unsighted people and limited clip period, I might non be able to make justness to the whole issue.

For instance surveies I intend to take aid from unsighted pupils of institute for blind, take them to celebrated edifices in Delhi and observe there experience. Thus the illations made out of the instance survey will depend to certain extent on the apprehension and co-operation of the people involved in the survey and how good they have understood the procedure of survey.

Covering all the inquiries posed above in item wo n’t be possible in this limited clip period. So the chief inquiry – laterality of ocular sense and apprehension of the non-visual perceptual experience will be covered in item and others will be merely used to complement the survey.

To understand unsighted perceptual experience, I will travel through one or two books on psychological science of blind and chiefly rely on sum-ups and reappraisals of the books.

I.IV RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

A thorough and thorough literature study on senses and perceptual experiences related to Visual and Non-Visual senses and around it will be done, which will supply a information base to get down the thesis.

Specifying and Classifying senses and clearly taging the five senses mentioned in the range and understanding where they lie on the overall list of Nineteen senses and there function in sing architecture.

Tracing the history of senses in human existences and civilization and the displacements that occurred in the laterality of one sense on another over the clip and the alterations that happened in architecture due to it.

Understanding blinds psychological science and perceptual experience of architecture through four Non-Visual senses.

Geting the existent image of architectural perceptual experience by making instance surveies and interviews ( which will be a comparing and analysis of the reading of a infinite by a unsighted individual and myself ) and so analyzing the collected informations and the existent image together to make to the concluding decision.

Chapter II

II. SENSORY PERCEPTION

This chapter chiefly deals with the debut of senses and perceptual experience and relates them to architecture. Defines and classifies senses and briefly hints its history through clip. This so besides shows the relation between senses and architecture. This chapter fundamentally builds a base by which farther statement or treatment will be understood.

II.I Senses and perceptual experience – definition

This subdivision has definitions of sense and perceptual experience. Then it will besides specify the five senses which will be covered in this thesis.

II.II Classification of senses

This chapter loosely classifies all the 19 senses and sees where the five mentioned senses lie. What are the receptor variety meats of these five senses and how the whole sensory system of these five senses plants.

II.III Shifts in the Dominance of senses – Brief History

This chapter briefly traces the history of senses of human existences through civilization and clip and shows how the laterality of one senses or the hierarchy of senses changed through clip, its ground and impact on the architecture and art of that clip.

II.IV Senses and architecture

This chapter relates architecture and senses and shows how architecture is experienced or perceived through our senses.

Chapter III

III. VISUAL PERCEPTION OF ARCHITECTURE

This chapter describes ocular perceptual experience of architecture. History of ocular perceptual experience through clip will be briefly traced. Laterality of ocular sense will be inquiry and before that the whole statement of its laterality will be established through Hagiographas of celebrated philosophers, designers, creative persons etc.

“ I exist in life merely if I can see – Le Corbusier ”[ 2 ]

“ I am and I remain an unrepentant ocular ; everything is in the ocular – Le Corbusier ”[ 3 ]

Peripheral vision will be described and its Importance and penchant over focussed vision will be highlighted, where it will be shown how peripheral vision makes the experience of a infinite more inclusive of all senses and focussed vision sole.

III.I Dominance over other Senses

This subdivision traces the history of ocular sense and its laterality over other senses.

III.II Loss of Architecture

This subdivision deals with the loss which architecture faces, by being visually experienced and non being multi-sensory.

III.III Peripheral Vision over focussed Vision

Here peripheral vision is compared to focused vision and grounds for the penchant of peripheral vision over focussed vision will be made.

SURVEY METHODOLOGY

The chief intent of these instance survey and the choice of these peculiar infinites and edifices is to make a comparing between celebrated infinites or edifices under a same class in footings of their response to centripetal perceptual experiences of a visually impaired individual ( Blind ) and Visually abled individual. E.g. Chandni Chowk is a topographic point with beds of ocular images and things go oning on the street in a helter-skelter manner in comparing to Lodhi estate.

All the edifices and infinites mentioned will be studied by me and a unsighted individual and the surveies will be overlapped to see the common countries between both.

Methodology:

Primary survey ( Study done by me – Visually abled )

Understanding the motion form in program, Entrance into the edifice, passage from outside to inside. How do these things relate to our senses or excite our senses.

Analyzing the elements of the infinite in footings of all five senses. This will include reading of textures present in the infinite ( haptic or Ocular ) , sound quality, and odor.

Interviewing regular visitants of that topographic point about how they feel about the infinite.

Secondary Study ( Study done with the aid of a unsighted individual )

Noting how the edifice opens itself to a unsighted individual in footings of its motion form, Entrance, etc.

Noting how a Blind individual perceives the elements of the infinite through his Non-Visual senses.

Overlap

Overlaping both the surveies and seeing the overall image of how the infinite responds to all our five sense, or does the ocular truly dominate over other senses. This will demo the common countries where the perceptual experience of visually impaired and visually abled individual differs or are common. This will besides demo how much the edifice is able or designed to excite our senses.
