Public Speaking (text) Thank you to the chairperson. A very pleasant day to the adjudicators, teachers and my fellow friends, Congratulations! You have obtained 8 As in your PMR! Ever heard of such greeting? May be some will say yes, but many will say never! In short not many of us are born not so successful That is what we think! So how do you measure successful? Is the numbers of A’s you obtain in your exams show that u are a successful person? Before I proceed Please lend me your ears. Spare me your time and allow me to share with all of you the secret of being successful Do you want to be successful? I mean successful in life?
Ladies and gentlemen, “Successful in life” Yes. That will be my topic for today. First of all, let me define this phrase ‘successful in life’. Does it mean that we must be rich , have a high- pay job, driving big car and staying in big mansion? Many people tend to think that only a person who has talents or a person who has good education will become successful in life. On the contrary, research has shown that a person’s success depends largely on his attitude, enthusiasm and commitment. Each of us is born with a different type of talent. Many people do not succeed in life because they do not have a positive attitude.
Of course some material wealth is important but to be considered successful in life means one is happy, healthy and able to do what one wants and is looked up to by family and friends. So, how does one reach the stage of being considered successful in life? First of all, to be successful you must be focused and know yourself. Examine what you enjoy doing most, the talents or skills you have and work hard at whatever is meaning to you. In a simple word, you must have a positive attitude. As you know, life is full of challenges. Only a person with a positive attitude can cope with these challenges and move forward in life.
We all have problems and it is how we react to them that makes the difference. Some of us tend to make mountains out of molehills. We overreact and thus feel miserable when we think about our problems. If only we have the right attitude and look for solutions to problems and view challenges as opportunities to gain experiences, our problems and challenges will seem small. We will then realize that ‘every cloud has a silver lining’. Only when we learn to handle our problems and concentrate on the problem at hand ,can we be successful. A successful person is a person who sets goals and then commits himself to achieve these goals.
We should set goals for our education, career, financial standing and family. Once we have set these goals, we must take the appropriate actions to achieve these goals. Set high standard and demand this from others. When you work in a group, make the others aware of your standards and expectations. Compromise only when it is absolutely necessary. Goals are the road map to the lives we wish to live. Once we have set them and worked on them, we can accomplish many things. Ladies ad gentlemen, Another quality that draws the line between successful and unsuccessful people is perseverance. They do not give up easily.
The lives of great men show us how every one of them had, at one point in their lives, failed to achieve their goals. However, their persistent attitudes have resulted in work that has benefited mankind. For an example, Thomas Edison, the great scientist, tried out many experiences and failed. It is because he remained undaunted and because of his perseverance, that he is credited with over 1000 inventions. If he had given up after a few unsuccessful attempts, we would have neither heard about him nor benefited from his inventions. Go the extra mile and make the difference to help others. This is what sets successful people apart from others.
Doing little things like returning phone calls, sending thank you cards and making the effort to communicate with others make people remember and respect you. This is an ingredient that goes into making you a successful person. Ladies and gentlemen, I’m sure you will agree with me that with success comes responsibility. When you were appointed a school prefect, chairperson of a society or a class monitor, you felt a sense of responsibility to your school and fellow school mates. In the adult working world, the same scenario applies. Carry out your duties and do your work responsibly with concern for fellow workers.
That is the mark of a successful person. A person who wants to be successful should have no time for self-pity. He should be future-oriented and look beyond the challenges and adversities that he faces. A self-confident person will realize that problems and challenges are hurdles that must be overcome in order to enjoy the fruits of his labour. My fellow audience, I hope I have impressed on you the proper steps to take to be considered successful. Let me take this opportunity to wish you all the best in the coming exam and your coming of age in the adult working world. Thank you very much.
