A typical occupied hotel guest room generates 300 to 500 gms. of waste which is higher in the departure rooms. Out of this waste an estimated about 60 per cent is recyclable. The following measures can be taken into consideration as a guideline for a recycle to reduce program * Newspapers Hotels can start by providing only the basic newspaper to the guest while other newspapers can be provided at central locations like lobby, business center or at the coffee shop instead of giving it all in the rooms. Newspapers should be supplied only in occupied rooms and should not be placed in vacant rooms. Also the precaution must be taken that the newspaper bag should be recyclable instead of the use and throw one. The fastest moving item in the guest’s stationary list is the writing pad or scribbling pads. Housekeeping associates must be trained and instructed not to use the note pads for any other work. The standard of having minimum leaflets should be brought down e. g. from three to five. Dog eared notepads should be put in for any other use at the back area instead of throwing them away. * Toiletries and bathroom amenities The bathroom toiletries contribute to the recyclable waste. It constitutes mainly of plastic bottles of lotions, shampoos, conditioner and bath gel. The permanent solution to this problem is to install the automatic dispensers for all these amenities.
This may not be feasible for all establishments considering the budget, availability of space in the bathroom and also sometimes the hotel standards. The plastic bottles should be recycled in the occupied rooms i. e. refilling of the empty bottles rather than replacing them. Many hotels collect the empty bottles and place them in the back area after refilling them. Hotels can also opt for small ceramic containers or ceramic dispensers for the higher category rooms and those can be refilled whenever required. The outer carton of all the bathroom amenities should be recycled if in a good condition. Hotels can also invest in the good quality plastic lined cartons so it can be reused for maximum time.
The toilet rolls or the face tissues should not be replaced till it gets over, along with a packed extra toilet roll or face tissue packet to comply with the respective hotel standards. The soap should not be replaced until it is fully over in the occupied rooms provided the guest agrees on the same. Linen wastage Many of the hotels actively recycle discarded linen. The bed sheet cut downs are used for pillow covers, dusters etc. Also the dusters are made from used bath towels and hand towels. Also some of the bath towels can be used for staff use. 2. Implemented a Chiller Plant Automation Strategy to operate and respond according to outdoor condition and actual load on property. * Constant monitoring and controlling of indoor temperature to avoid unnecessary cooling. * Implemented free cooling concept by maximizing fresh air intake during winter and running the chiller at minimum. * Schedule of exterior LED screen brightness to 50% during night time. * Preventive maintenance program to ensure the efficiency and proper operation of electrical and mechanical equipment, to minimize waste of energy. * Housekeeping Team Members adjust temperature settings and turn off lights in vacant suites. Implemented an environmental and energy conservation awareness program to educate all Team Members on minimizing energy consumption. As they become widely available, these products are being used more and more in hotels around the country. Many of the products can be purchased in bulk concentrated form. But if you find mixing cleaners from concentrate is too labor intensive, effective, nontoxic, ready-to-use products are available as well. 5. Employee training
